A city in eastern Xinjiang, China.

Tulufan or Turfan and Fayuan or Kucheng lie to the east of the capital. Hami, an oasis in the desert, is yet nearer the eastern boundary of the province and is an important post on the chief road into China proper.

THE decision having been reached to send me to Sinkiang, the question arose as to how I was to get there. The Hami melon, native to the Hami Region of Sinjiang Province, has found a new home here in Jhuangwei, Yilan. The soil downstream of the Lanyang River is great for the cultivation of hami melon because of the plentiful sunshine, excellent water system, and the local mild weather. The Hami melon was introduced to Jhuangwei in 1982.

The new silos are clearly being built to be discovered. The most recent silo field, on which construction began in March, is in the eastern part of the Xinjiang region, not far from one of China’s notorious “re-education” camps in the city of Hami.
