Definition of "Luoyang"

The remains of the capital of the Eastern Han dynasty, Luoyang 洛阳, are situated approximately 15 km east of the present-day city of Luoyang in Henan. Since the site is bordered on the north by the Mangshan 邙山 Mountains and overlooks the Luo River to the south, it has protective natural barriers and is also at an important junction for transportation and communication (fig. 37).

The Longmen Grottoes are located in the south of Luolong District of Luoyang. Here two mountain cliffs stand face to face, like a pair of natural watchtowers over the Yi River that flow between them, giving rise to the name “Luoyang’s Yi River Watchtower Gate.”

Local authorities said the rainfall had caused a 20-metre breach in the Yihetan dam in the city of Luoyang west of Zhengzhou, and that the dam could collapse at any time.
