Definition of "bewitchment"

I would say that the spell – a bewitchment I’ve doubtless failed fully to capture – had broken by the time the family appeared, waxwork-like on the balcony, their majesties unable to enjoy the flypast in crowns that strained their necks and would not let them look up.
