In a statement late Wednesday, the defence command of Kinmen, a group of Taiwan-controlled islands that sit opposite China's Xiamen and Quanzhou cities, said the incident occurred on Aug. 16 on Erdan islet, and confirmed the soldiers had thrown stones to see off what it called a civilian drone.

Kinmen defence command spokesman Chang Jung-shun said the live rounds were fired just before 6 p.m. (1000 GMT) at the drone which had approached Erdan islet, with flares being used previously. The drone then flew off back to China, he said.

Chen was reported missing on Erdan island following a roll call, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday, adding it had set up a special task force to locate him.Erdan, part of the Taipei-controlled Kinmen islands, is located less than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the Chinese port city of Xiamen in southeastern Fujian province.
